Novel Corona Virus – Everything you need to know to keep yourself safe!

The Novel Corona Virus (nCoV) has led to quite a scare across the globe, with news of fresh cases and developments pouring in everyday. Not only has this created an environment of fear, it has caused a lot of misinformation to be floated. In this article, let us bust some common myths and share the right information. After all, to be safe, you must be informed.

Myth 1: nCoV makes it unsafe to accept letters/packages from China
Fact: This is an absolute myth. Previous analysis shows that the coronavirus does not survive long on objects like packages or letters.

Myth 2: Pneumonia vaccinations can protect you from nCoV
Fact: While getting vaccinated for pneumonia can certainly protect your health, they may not protect you against the new coronavirus. Researchers are working on developing a vaccine specifically for protection against the Coronavirus.

Myth 3: Eating garlic can help prevent you from getting infected
Fact: This not true, as the anti-microbial properties of garlic have not been proven to protect people from the new coronavirus.

Myth 4: Wearing masks will ensure that you will not get infected
Fact: Wearing light-weight surgical masks may offer some protection, but since they are not airtight, they might not be 100% effective as a protective measure.

So how does one stay protected against this disease?

The WHO (World Health Organization) offers the below advice to minimize the risk of catching the virus:

  • Frequently washing your hands with alcohol based sanitizers or soap & water
  • Maintaining a distance of at least 3 feet from people who show signs of fever/sneezing
  • Covering the mouth while sneezing or coughing
  • Avoid spitting in public
  • Wash food thoroughly before consuming them
  • Thoroughly cook meat and eggs before consumption
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth without washing your hands
  • Avoid travelling to areas that have an outbreak

Despite taking all these measures, do visit a doctor if you are exhibiting any of the below symptoms to be on the safer side:

  • Respiratory trouble
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing

While there is no need to panic, do keep yourself informed and stay protected.
